Another nice write up with great minis and terrain.
Also, good idea with your "table top battle board" idea. I think that would work well. I've never used minis as I cannot paint worth a darn, and have always used Vassal by putting together a module for it. First one I did was for Red Sand, Blue Sky, years ago. I'm still partial to Ed's older titles, and Red Sand, Blue Sky has really good rules for some dramatic melees.

I sometimes think painting the minis is the best part of the hobby for me. It's while painting that characters take on an identity and it is when I think up scenarios. But, I hear you about painting - some of us have busy lives where there's little time for painting or even learning to paint. Counters, Vassal, etc. are all good options for playing games. Also, if you do like minis, check with your local game store for people who will paint for a modest price. It shouldn't cost an arm and a leg for a tabletop standard level of painting.
My friend Lyn Stahl started that way and over time she's won several painting awards and runs the painting competition at Origins and is a judge at GenCon. She got so good, she quit her minimum wage job and started a full time business - Metalhead Minis.
Thanks for the compliment, it's odd that miniature games are often shelved when a new game comes out, while board games continue to get played. I agree there are gems in the older titles.

Miniature games get shelved for lack of table space quite often. 4x6 was the old days and doesn't work well nowadays.

Oh yeah, & 4x6' table was considered small - a lot of those old grognards played on 5x8' or 5x12' tables.

I remember college days where we had two old doors laying on saw horses in our dingy basement and that was our table. It was huge. That's incomprehensible at this point. Of course, we had to walk uphill to class, both ways, in the snow. Fighting roving bandits trying to hand us AOL CDs while quipping Flip Wilson lines as Jack Benny played on our Victrolas.

Love the Meerkat village! That would make for a great PEF marker / something to place for a PEF that resolved as nothing.

Years ago, Bob Minadeo who authored some of the THW Classics, used wildlife as PEF markers. One was a flock of birds & another a lone fox, etc. It gave an extra layer of immersion to his table top. I tend to use wildlife as scatter terrain to make the board less boring to look at.
