Does the Long Rifle game include counters? I fancy giving it a try, but don’t want to have to get figures for it.

It does. 49 of them, in fact.

If you do get figures for it, I highly recommend the 15mm French and Indian Wars line from Blue Moon, sold by Old Glory in the US. I went to 15mm for my skirmish gaming around the beginning of the lockdown, and have been loving the number of different eras and nationalities I can pick up for a decent price. Couple bags of these guys and you'd be pretty well set up: www.oldgloryminiatures.com/products.asp?cat=15mm+French+and+Indian+War

At the other end of the scale, I have been collecting Armies In Plastic 54mm and Marx Boonesboro recasts (among others) to play. The toy soldier feel seems perfect to me for the time period. The BMC bags, though not great sculpts, are a pretty inexpensive starting point, too.
As to your original question, there are included counters which are perfect as is and really don’t need replacing.

I've never played with 54mm beyond plastic green army men, but with a game of limited scale like this they'd be a lot of fun. Only issue is now I'm building all my terrain for 15mm/28mm, so it'd look goofy in comparison.
