I've played a bit of 5150 No Limits but it occurs to me that I might have interpreted something wrong. At the beginning of the month if you roll up an Involuntary Encounter of a "Job Offer" does this then also replace your Voluntary Encounter at the end of the month? That seems a bit weird but it is one way one could read the rules given the "The same time you take the Job Offer, it replaces your next Voluntary Encounter" on Pg.44. I had been playing that I could still take another (voluntary) encounter at the end of the month.

I have always played it as replacing the Voluntary Encounter for the month. I figure that someone sought you out and offered you a job - Involuntary Encounter. But whether you take the job or not is your choice. If you accept it, it becomes your Voluntary Encounter. Maybe you had other plans for this month. ("I gotta get off this stinking rock!") But if you take it, it keeps you tied down for the whole month. YMMV.
Now, some people don't like to be told "No." You could spin some kind of trouble out of a rejected offer - right now or in the future. Or you could find yourself on some Mover's fecal roster.

Ahh, I've never played that you can turn down an Involuntary Encounter and so my thinking on the Voluntary Encounter was that your chance to move the story in a direction your character wanted. Something new to try!

The official (LOL) way is if you score an Involuntary Encounter Job Offer, accept it, this becomes your next Voluntary Encounter. But you can play it as desired.

Ok, thanks for the clarification, Ed. (And yeah - we should play the game in a way that is fun for us. Just wanted to understand the default assumption.)

That is interesting. I’ve always given my character the agency to refuse jobs and assumed it was official...

No way! Nobody tells Zack Levi what to do! It's my life and my ship! (Well, except for the 97% the bank owns.) And I reserve the right to say "No" to any job offer.
Unless it's from ths biggest mob boss in New Hope City. But how was I supposed to know that the little twerp was working for Salka Big-nose?
I wonder how Ring Nine is this time of year....
