Hey all,
Played an excellent game of Nuts! Big Battles this afternoon. A Canadian Rifle Company was attacking into a German held village with two platoons up starting the attack. The table had dense village across sections 1-3 while section 4 was wooded, allowing a covered approach to the possible defenders of the town.
The Canadians managed to begin their flank move into the woods from behind the lone structure in section 7 but they drew a PEF in the centre field which turned into a German platoon supported by an MG42. The flank movement suffered a decent set back as fire from the Grenadiers in the field inflicted disruption on the leading platoon and the attack was stalled. An engagement continued until the Canadians were forced back from the edge of the woods and into the safety of the trees.
Pushing around the persistent platoon in the field, the flank attack came to the edge of the village in section 1. Rolling reinforcements for the Germans, a supported squad was spotted in the ruins in the village’s centre taking up an obvious firing position. The leading rifle platoon again suffered losses and was eventually rendered ineffective by the dug-in troops to their front. With a third Canadian platoon from the company now joining the attack, it looked possible to continue the press forward.
The third platoon made as good time as possible by skirting the woods to avoid fire from the defenders still in the field. They approached the village as the second platoon was joined by the Captain, preparing for a fresh attack on the small group of Germans holding the village. Taking position in a stretch of buildings along the town’s edge, the second platoon successfully took on the squad and MG42 holding the ruins. Forcing them into a full retreat, the job looked done until another round of German reinforcements was rolled. A platoon of StuGs entered from the far side of the village in section 3 and immediately the attack seemed to have turned for the worst.
Breaking off into two prongs, one section of StuGs drove towards the town centre while the other broke around the village’s edge. Catching the third platoon in the open, the StuGs mauled the approaching troopers and forced them to cover. Down to a final squad, the third platoon attempted a close assault only to be overrun and forced to break. With a single PIAT left with second platoon, the Captain made his last play.
Attacking the StuGs in the centre of town, the PIAT team scored a stunning hit and destroyed them. As the flanking StuGs brought their guns to bear, the Canadians sheltering in the village came under fire but withstood despite the odds. Taking advantage of strong activation dice, the PIAT team once again struck and destroyed their targets. Eliminating the armoured threat was a surprise win for the Canadians and left them with only the bypassed defenders in the field to deal with.
The last remaining platoon took up positions at the edge of town, behind the Grenadiers that had harassed them so effectively before. Pouring fire into the enemy, the riflemen drew the Germans into falling back before a full retreat.
Having barely survived, the company stood on their objective in control of the village. With all enemy driven off, I’d say they performed rather well.
