I've been thinking about the monthly "cost of living" in 5150 NB.
Those cars and spaceships are awfully useful, but they can get expensive! (Especially for some starting gutterpunk...)
Plus, we're often talking about getting more Challenge rolls into the gameplay, so I thought, "Hey! What if my characters can do their own maintenance?" It might look something like this:
Each month, if you're doing your own maintenance on your vehicles, make a Savvy challenge roll:
If your equipment falls under the "Cheap Stuff / -1 Rep Quality Modifier" category, it's an Easy Challenge. If it's "Average Stuff / No Quality Modifier", it's a Standard Challenge. If it's "Good Stuff / +1 Rep Quality Modifier", it's a Difficult Challenge.
Pass 2 - Congratulations, you've kept it running this month, and saved yourself a Rep Point in upkeep. Pass 1 - You COULD keep trying for the pass 2, or you could just pay the Upkeep before you make it worse. Re-roll, and another Pass 1 counts as Pass 0. Pass 0 - Congratulations! You've actually made it worse! Add an additional Rep Point in cost to this month's upkeep.
You'd make one roll for each point of upkeep you're trying to offset, so a large, damaged spaceship would take more rolls to repair and maintain than an automobile in good condition.

I like it. That's what THW is all about. Your game, your way. Input form gamers over the last 25 years has helped improve the rules.
