Traveling soon, and want to play Nuts! but don’t want to take minis with me. What the best way to play? Have never tried battleboard or pen and paper, and not sure where to start. Would still like a somewhat”scale” experience if possible. Probably going to play blood upon the risers if I can make it work.
Any tips on what to bring and how to play?

I'm not a big fan of the battle board solution so I'm going to give you the slightly-more-complicated-but-lets-you-enjoy-the-maneuver-warfare solution:
Get yourself 4 to 6 sheets of paper printed with a terrain map. Roughly 2 x 2 but you can be a little sloppy. Print another sheet with the outline of some buildings that can be cut out; I suggest some thicker and more resilient paper for this part.
And then… Chits. Just print out some flat, square markers for the characters you want to take in your backpack. It's kind of a pain in the butt to get them printed on cardboard so you're not going to have anything as sturdy as comes with a professional production, but you can certainly have "good enough." They're easy enough to make yourself with minimal graphic talent; just make sure they have their Rep on them and a relatively unique identifier number so that you can look them up on a sheet – and you can put their stats on the sheet if you really want to so any marker can be almost anything…
And you're done. Put them in a Ziploc, toss them in your bag. Go get a few small things of aquarium "gem gravel" to use for markers for various states, throw them in a Ziploc, toss that in your bag. Make sure that you bring 6D6 with you if you want the tactile experience or use your choice of dice application on your phone.
You're done. Good to go. If you're feeling more ambitious, insert magnets to taste.
That's all you need.
I would probably go with 1 cm² or 1.5 cm² chits and measure distances in centimeters rather than inches, just so the map feels a little beefier but that's up to you. You can probably fit an entire mechanized infantry Regiment in a single bag if you really want.

Couple of additional suggestions:
1. If you have or can make the art for counters or chits, just print them out on Sticker Project Sheets. These are whole sheets of adhesive-backed white paper. Stick the sheet on heavy cardstock and cut the counters out. They will be as close to a commercial product as you want to spend the time and effort to make them.
2. If you have a tablet, make a pdf of the map. Open the map in the Notes app. Now you can mark your units on the map in assorted colors, make moves, erase and change, and save the marked map whenever you want. You can save the result after each turn. Perfectly portable, nothing to get lost, and you can play just about anywhere. Open in a split-screen with game charts in the other half, and you have everything you need.
