... is on offer at Wargame Vault for a very attractive price so I'm strongly inclined to get it but I bought 5150 Platoon Leader a while ago and I'm wondering whether there's much overlap between the two? I ask because although the description on WV that "5150 Star Army is a man to man skirmish game where one figure equals one man, alien, or vehicle", so a squad level game, it then goes on to state "start off with a squad and soon you'll be playing platoons and companies". My uncertainty is compounded because, if memory serves me right, the description for Platoon Leader says more or less the same thing. The offer is very compelling so I'll be perfectly happy if there's a degree of overlap. I just don't want to duplicate what I've got. Does anyone have a clear view of the differences? Best regards, Chris

The reference for 2nd Tour saying you can play a platoon refers to once you get the hang of things, you can play multiple squads where each figure fires. Platoon Leader is firing by stands of multiple figures I believe. Plus game mechanics are different - no rolling for successes. Hope this helps.

I'd come to a similar conclusion after managing to find my copy of Platoon Leader and scan through it. So I'll go and get myself a copy of 2nd Tour before the offer closes. (Unlike Warrior Heroes A&A. By the time I'd found out how that relates to RRTK, which I already have, the recent offer had ended. Sigh.) All the best, Chris

To be honest, I didn't find Platoon Leader took any advantage of the fact it required figures in a squad to remain in contact with each other. It still resolved combat on an individual basis. It wasn't markedly faster than 5150 Star Army (either 1st or 2ed).

Need to play it more to see the difference. 1 - In Sight. 2 - Ranged combat. 3 - Ranged combat damage. 4 - Melee. 5 - Reaction Tests. Only two instead of five. Yes, they are still individuals, but the mechanics are very different and speeds up play with the same results. Thanks for posting as it gives me a chance to explain the differences.

Hi Ed, your clarifications and the discussion about Platoon Leader prompted me to go back to the rules and read them again, which has raised a few questions. As this thread is really about 2nd Tour I'll start another one on the topic of Platoon Leader and post them there. I'd be grateful for any clarifications that you can offer. Regards, Chris
