Ok, I’m a rules nerd and have hundreds of rules I never play though many I do. I just am always looking for that perfect set. Of course what I want from those ‘perfect’ set is always changing so even setting aside the impossibility of the original goal moving the posts certainly doesn’t help. Currently I looking at rules that are campaign orentated and relatively simple at the battlefield level. I recently bought 5150 Total War but found I couldn’t get my head round how to start a campaign. So I put them into the Great Rules Library and moved on. I have since got into Darkage skirmishes and a friend suggested Great Hall Burning. I bought them but found the same problem how do you start? Playing the game seems straight forward enough but I really struggle to figure out how to start a game. I think part the problem is the variety of options which are fine once you’ve played a bit but somewhat overwhelming for a beginner. One of the big problems is figuring out how as a start out commander I fit into and create a larger force. Has anyone got a walk through for how any of the TwoHour can campaigns begin? Perhaps just a pre-generated starting force for a campaign. I can then have a go to see how it works and tailor future games to my tastes. Much appreciate any assistance.

Most of the THW titles use what is called the Quick & Easy Campaign system. I first encountered it in the Colonial ruleset, Fortunes Won & Lost. Anyway, your force begins with a Major Morale or Campaign Morale point. In 5150 Total War, for example, my Free Company (the Pink Pixies) begins the campaign with a Morale of 3 while their opponent, Bugs (Xenomorphs) have a starting campaign Morale of 5. This is on page 34. The campaign is a set of linked missions which are played until a player's Morale point equals 0. You begin with a Patrol Mission using a single squad. After the mission is complete, you test to see if the Morale has changed if you played an Attack, Defend, or Tunnel mission (pages 34 & 35). The next mission you will play will be determined by the Next Mission table on page 35. The forces available for use in the next mission will in that mission's Forces section. For my current campaign, I'm playing a platoon of mercenaries (Free Company) called the Pink Pixies. They failed their first mission, a patrol where the third squad was badly mauled ( Screaming in the Dark ). Since it was a Patrol Mission, the Campaign Morale was not affected and remains at 3. Failing a Patrol Mission means my platoon's next mission will be a Defend Mission. My force for the Defend Mission will consist of my entire platoon, minus the members lost in the Patrol Mission. Be sure to check the section on Major Morale or Campaign Morale for whichever game you are playing as the conditions for adjusting Morale can be slightly different in different rulesets - for example in game Fortunes Won & Lost, I would have lost a Morale point for failing a Patrol. Hope this helps.

Thanks atomicfloozy. I read your link and see your ‘star’ is a private in the squad. I assume your just generated the whole squad then chose one to be the star and adjusted rep as necessary. Now I’ll have another go. In answer to your question. No I never want to encounter xenomorphs either.

Most of the time, my star is the leader, but for this campaign I wanted to experience it as the new girl on the block. All this does is give the new girl the advantages of a higher Rep, being able to use Star Power, being capable of extraordinary effort and the ability to cheat death, just so she can have a better chance of surviving.
Anyway, I hope you see that a campaign is just a linked set of encounters or missions. Each THW ruleset has a small section on campaigns to use as a guide to get started. For instance, the platoon's next mission is a Defend Mission, even if they succeed, they may decide to evacuate & nuke the site from orbit - it's the only way to be sure....

This will make it easier to understand. 5150 Total War - Step by step. 1 - Go to page 3 - Your Star is Rep 5. 2 - Go to page 10. Pick the list you want to be. 3 - Go to the 1st Rep 5 guy on the list - example Row 1 on the Star Army list. 4 - You will only use 1/2 of a squad so it's easier to learn so the next two rows on the list are your guys. 5 - Go to page 34 to see your starting Campaign Morale and the enemy Morale too. Example SA 4 Hishen 4. 6 - Go to page 35 and your first mission is a Patrol. 7 - After it's over, go to page 34, Shifting Morale, and see if the Campaign continues based on how well you did on your Mission. 8- When you finish go to page 35 and see your Next Mission based on how well you did on your last. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the sequence Ed the Two Hour. I’m going to print the sequence out and add to my rule book!
