Hi All,
I managed to play my first game of 'Pulp PI- Investigator For Hire' yesterday evening and although I was a bit hesitant at first (well it seemed so different to other THW formats/games), I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think it'll become a firm favourite of mine very quickly.
I loved that it was so simple, quick and easy to pick-up and play, yet with very little effort it spun me into a rich narrative World of those Pulp era Gumshoe comics, novels and films we all know and love.
The game quickly became intuitive with the main tables and the game mechanics becoming committed to memory very easily. The game flowed soooo easily for me and took very, very, little effort to fire up my limited imagination and made me feel like I was watching a black & white pulp era film unfold before me with the downtrodden slightly character flawed PI on the case.
I played with only the rulebook, pencil, dice and a notepad and wondered if not having a game table or battleboard, miniatures and scenery would detract from the game, but not a bit of it, in fact it was fantastic to have this much fun with a game and not have to bother with any of that. This did shock me a little as I was convinced that the experience would be lessened because of the abscence of the 'usual paraphernalia', but the ease of play and the narrative flow of the game just made it a joy to play, one of my best gaming sessions for a long time.
Artie 'Chip' McCormack will be back on the case soon........as soon as his ribs heal that is!
Thanks to all of those involved in producing this game, I was also very impressed with the quality of the rulebook and the counters, top notch!
Cheers
Steve
My gumshoe, Arthur "Chip" McCormack took on the case of Dazzler the missing racehorse (the 'starter' scenaio in the rulebook). Luck was with me and it took Artie only two days to discover that Benito Gambino (a local speakeasy owner) was responsible for the caper. (Artie discovered three clues on each of the first two days, the dice were being kind!) ...As the book says...Artie smiled as they drove off. " I like cases with happy endings.." Too bad neither of us saw the black sedan following behind." - Which lead straight into a Confrontation....-Bella dropped me off at my apartment building on the East Side. Although we were getting along fine, She refused my invitation to stay a while and I climbed the stairs, greeted Mr. Tibbles and wearily slipped off my coat, hat and shoulder holster. The buzzer sounded, so She was interested after all. "...Come on up Honey, The doors open, No.12.." I moved into the kitchen got two glasses and a bottle of whiskey from the cupboard.....Then all Hell broke loose. The door flew open and two of Gambino's mooks rushed me, the bigger one (Bruno I think), giving me the good news with a shiny duster. I managed to put the smaller guy down before Bruno managed to put my lights out and it was Goodnight Vienna! (Despite Star Power, the dice Gods conspired against Artie and he still went down)... I awoke hours later, bloody, bruised, a headache the size of Texas and what felt like at least two broken ribs. How could I have been so careless? The apartment was trashed and the photos I had incriminating Gambino personally had gone. (Rolled for a 'Find' scenario next, Artie will need to recover the evidence if Gambino is to go down for kidnappng Dazzler.)
