I painted up some elephants from Acheson Creations for my Colonial games. Tell me what you think: Elephants Three

They look great! I really like how you use several shades of grey: very effective. In terms of basing, it’s something that I’ve always shied away from. When many models come with a suitable base for them to stand up (as it looks like your elephants do), I’ve never understood the need to add another. Don’t get me wrong, I think they can look really good, but it just seems like too much work for me. Some minis don’t stand up naturally on their included bases (especially the cheaper ones) and for them I’ll cut up some clear plastic and glue them on. In a similar vein I’ve started using clear bases for minis with the slotta-base things.
I know that many rules insist on having a certain size and shape base, but that strikes me as gatekeeping or someone telling me what to do. It’s my game and I’ll most likely be playing it own my own (and making many mistakes along the way) so I’ll play it the way I want!
Sorry for ranting. Great elephants.

I understand where you are coming from on basing. These marvelous elephants from Acheson Creations don't really need the addition of an oval base, but I added them to give them a bit of uniformity and impart an eye-pleasing means to tie them to the other figures in my games.
There are some "old-school" rules where the bases are more important than the figures on them. These are games where the base is tied to ground scale where each millimeter or fraction of an inch equals x number of meters or feet of ground. Most notably are the WRG, DBx, & too many Napoleonic rules to mention. Watching these games, sometimes looks as though the players are solving a geometry problem.
And tastes change as rules change. A lot of figures I would have once based on square bases are now being based on round bases as I'm now playing more abstract games.

I don’t mind complex games such as those you mention in theory, but I think that in practice I’m more of a beer and pretzels (well, tea and biscuits really) gamer. Another thing I mislike about basing is that it’s got its own skill set and I’m still struggling to get adequately painted miniatures done without adding more complexity and know how. As it is it takes me a long time to get minis fully painted. Basing them would mean that I’d never have any to play with!
