So I’m going to start up a campaign but was going to do it in my own universe and rules. I’ll do reports here, but will also include my homebrew stuff here and you guys can give feedback.
So to start off, I won’t be using the ring system, so my alternative for the “Roll against the ring tests” When prospecting in stuff would go like this:
Humanity is relatively early in its colonization, and most ships don’t have a drive capable of using jump zones on their own (these are called Cardinal points). There are a couple of factions based on earth, with their own colonies (Earth isn’t unified in this one). There are also a series of colonies in other systems that broke off and formed the Alliance of Colonial Nations.
The big factions then are as follows:
One Nation Earth (ONE)- Composed of the former NE and Western states of the US, the former European Union, and the reformed parts of China.
The Republic of the Central States- From the former US, mostly central and southern states.
The Peoples Republic of China- loyalists to the PRC post world war 3. They also have a hidden colony off world.
The Alliance of Colonial Nations (where most of the setting takes place, on the other side of the “Gate”, which was discovered before the Cardinal Points.
As there are no rings, I’ve divided the rolls from ring to “Colonization Level” (for prospecting), and inverted the confrontation rolls, to be tested against the systems law level (so failure means contact, rather than passing).
The colonization level ranges from 2-6. 2 being the most colonized to date, 6 being just discovered. 6 are out for any ship not equipped with the Cardinal Drive (which will essentially be the special jump drive upgrade for expeditions). Every movement in a system will essentially count as a month (think Expanse level travel), but Cardinal points will essentially be instant. Communication between systems relies on courier ships that jump from one system to the next one every few days to transmit and receive communications. Upon transmitting and receiving they jump back to the other system to do the same, so communication takes a while.
Lore wise, my character will be from the ACN, as a retired Colonel from the ASF (Alliance Space Force, and they’ll use the current US Space Force organizations with some tweaks). He will start off with two in his party. One was his XO, and one will be a mining specialist that was formerly a Guardian (the ASF version of the Star Marines).
In the Alliance, every planet is its own political entity, with their own citizenship statuses. A citizen is pretty much limited with their licenses to their system alone (for bounty hunting, mining, etc). However, if one serves in the ASF they get the status of First Citizen, which allows them to get a universal license.
Upon retiring, officers get a choice of a plot of land on a colony, or a ship. Enlisted just get a plot of land on a new colony.
Retired Colonel Mathathias Steele originally came from a class 1 planet colony called the Valien Federation. It was the first extra-solar federation. After distinguishing himself in the Qin Republic War as part of Taskforce A, Delta 34, Numbered Space Force 3, Core Star Command, he grew dissatisfied with his command and retired rather than get promoted to general. He took a mining ship (Light Freighter) and license as his reward, and his XO, Major Stormwell resigned his commission to follow him.
They put up an add for someone who had experience in prospecting, and met Don, who ended his term of service as a corporal in the Guardian Corps.
From there they went to an outer colony system (Colonial status 5, law level 2)
I’ll roll up their stats and the system they’ll start in in a bit and try out some prospecting (and hopefully I can smooth talk any pirates that may want my ship!)
And you never know, I might run into aliens.
