Yesterday a friend and I had a first game of Morale Npoleon. We liked it, it played quickly and well.
Here goes in red.
Here goes in red.
The starting position was the result of a recent game with a different, more detailed, but also slower set oif rules. A bataillon consists of 3 bases with 6mm figures, each base 20mm wide.
A number of questions cropped up, notably about infantry in square.
1) Forming square when charged by cavalry:
Rule 9.2 about forming square when charged
</div>
Thi is not entirely clear to us. We see two possible readings of the first sentence.
a) It could refer to the maximum possible distance (Light Cavalry - 2D6, Maximum 12", Heavy Cavalry - Higher D6 - 6") OR
b) to the movement distance as defined by the movement die roll
Example:
Infantry is at 5" from light cavalry. The cavaly roll 5+1 = 6" movement and can reach the infantry. Under reading a), the infantry is less than 12"/2 = 6" and become unformed, under reading b) they are more than 6"/2 = 3" away and can form square.
We went with b), but is this correct? Correct.
2) Forming square when threatened by cavalry:
We had an infantry regiment in column that was threatened by cavalry within a distance of less than 6 Inches. According to the rules 3.3.4.1 about restrictions to changing formation, the threatened infantrry are not allowed to change formation in their activation. However, they are allowed to form square when charged. This strikes us as wrong and we think infantry should be allowed to form square even when in the threat zone of cavalry, indeed, especially in that situation. The reason we went with no is that in real life, if the infantry would try and go to square the cavalry would immediately charge and catch them unformed. You can choose to tweak the rule though.
3) Squares attacked by infantry:
What happens when squares are attacked by infantry? We had a two-bataillon regiment that had been attacked by cavalry, but formed square and drove the attackers off. In the next enemy activation, while still in square, they were charged by infantry. We didn't find any special provision for this in the rules, so assumed it should be treated like a defending two-bataillon formed column of infantry, plus the artillery in this case. This makes squares defending against infantry quite strong.
Is this correct? Check the Melee Table. The Sqaure does not get the +1 for firing as they are not in line. Hope this helps.
Our impression is that squares were relatively weak when attacked by infantry, so there should be some kind of drawback.
