How long did it take to play from start to finish? I bet you spent more time writing about it than playing it. LOL That’s how THW works sometimes. Great stuff, thank.

Yeah, it didn't really take long to play. Not counting the time for the bath, but including time to photograph minis, time looking up rules and time spent comparing older rules - I'd guess actual play was an hour and a half give or take a few minutes. Time spent writing by far is the bulk of the time.
But the extra time spent writing is worth it - how many of you knew Farragut Square in D.C was named after Admiral David "Damn the Torpedoes" Farragut?

AAR's like this are both inspirational and hugely helpful in learning how the THW system works. I especially love how you break down the thought process behind certain scenes (when to use Challenge rolls, how to replicate something not specifically provided for in the rules, etc.). I'm not able to post on your site, but I too would love to hear your thoughts on the new system as opposed to earlier 5150 releases. Looking forward to the next installment! Installments?

All good, it seems that the ‘narrative flow’ is more similar to the mechanic in LTL than previous 5150 rules, would that be fair or am I reading that into it? It would be very useful if you could do a summary of your impressions of the new rules highlighting the differences/ simularities to the previous rules we know and love please. (Basically is it worth getting the new rules even though I own most of the 5150 rulesets already?) Thanks for sharing, loving the resin minis.

I do, it was one of the first THW games I bought. I bought it from you at Skirmish Day in Plano (Dallas suburb).
The games have changed over the years, in large because we've changed in how we play them. "Narrative Flow" is hard to pin down, though LTL is good at it, I've played some LTL games at conventions where there was no flow at all & was jerked from scene to scene. Some LTL games wove beautiful tales, in one, my greedy little heart was filled with joy as the treasure of Opar lay at my feet, but at the end of the game, my larcenous character was kidnapped by great apes & I could only hope Tarzan would rescue me.
I think the real question about narrative flow has to do with the tug of war between "open sandbox" & "guided adventure path" in game mechanics & how the game master or player runs the game. Some of the 5150 titles are table top Wargames, some are a hybrid of role playing & table top Wargame, often called "immersion games" or RPG-Lite. Beginning with the 5150: No Limits series, some titles are full RPGs. This new edition of 5150: New Beginnings is the first core title to be an RPG.
I can often find a narrative flow in just about any game. And I think narrative flow is subjective. Many years ago, I heard the Clancy Brothers say that Finnegan's Wake to most was a fun little drinking song, but Joyce found in it the meaning & purpose of life in the universe.

Good stuff. I'm guessing you were a DM in other games as you built your NPCs for the Encounters. There are 32 already generated Encounters in the book. That gives you 72 pre-generated lists over a variety of areas in NHC that you can use as written. No need to roll up NPCs at random. I'll have to do one to show how to do it. Thanks for taking the itme and posting. Oh yeah, want to play on the tabletop. Use this. BBorTabletop.PDF (231.7 KB) Plus there will be a tabletop doc outlining how to build NHC and play on a table.
