Wow!
Tried out 5150 BABL (Board game) for the first time today, just to make sure I had the game mechanics right etc..
The adventure could well have been entitled..."I'd forgotten how much the Dice Gods Hated Me..." or "....Thank The Heavens For Star Power..."
Doc is a Bounty Hunter along with his two colleagues Long Tall Sally and 'H', who have met in Doolies for a beer to celebrate their last collar and travel to The Heights to deposit their reward and on the way press the flesh with some contacts/ acquaintances with a view to picking up their next job.
Once on the transit system they run into Diamond Jim a smuggler and three of his cronies, but as there are no outstanding tickets on him a professional nod is exchanged but nothing more.
After arriving at The Heights whilst walking through the Downtown Parking Lot Xanthia a Xeog Criminal of H’s acquaintance shouts an insult across the street but her Basic partner ushers her into a nearby Bar before anything can escalate. Just as a group of four drunken Joe’s spill out of the Bar and push noisily past with admiring glances and a few catcalls directed at Sally.
The Bounty Hunters make their way to The Main Plaza where they bump into Lt. Callaghan and Officer Dreyfus who shoot the breeze with them while waiting for coffee and doughnuts. Until the loud voice of District Governor Grummand and his giant of a bodyguard push past them to the front of the queue.
Walking toward The Greater National Bank Doc spies two Bounty Hunters from a rival outfit and almost immediately they rush at Doc with billy clubs drawn. Doc gets off a rushed shot at his assailant, but misses whilst H has better luck and the second hapless thug goes down with a leg wound. Doc parries a wild swing whilst planting a fist square into the jaw of his opponent sending him sprawling.
Wanting no contact with Law Enforcement the group quickly dive into the building next door (Centrepoint Towers) only to run into four Enforcers from The Twango Family (One of NHC’s drug families).
“Hello Doc.”
“Hello Brunt, we don’t want no trouble..”
“Sorry Doc. No can do. Mr. Twango understands you had a hand in putting one of his mules behind bars last month. He has asked us to deliver a painful message…”
Doc, Sally and H all pull out their pistols and fire, Doc and Sally’s shots hit woodwork as the Thugs dive for cover but H finds his target and one of the Twango Boys goes down rolling on the floor. The lead Thug and one of the other Thugs fire back hitting nothing but wall and furniture.
“Lets get outta here” Shouts one of the Thugs and he and his oppo scarper down a corridor.
“Get back here you cowardly Ba$%£s”. Screams Brunt as he fires missing Doc’s head by millimetres, Doc gets off a shot as he ducks behind a desk.
Doc shakes his head “..That was close, too close, I'm gettin too old for this $hit..” With a roar he stands up pistol raised just in time to see Brunt disappearing after his colleagues.
“Hell Boss” Said Sally “I sure thought you were a dead man, Brunt had you square in his sights”
“Yep, you sure were lucky” H added, “Someone up there was looking out for you”.
“You make your own luck” grinned Doc. “You did good today H, boy I could use a drink, c'mon I'm buying!”
I must get a new set of dice, interaction after interaction kept coming out with a neutral result.
At last a confrontation (non-lethal) and Doc can’t hit a barn-door! But at least he can swing a mean punch.
Then to top it all my first lethal confrontation and Doc goes immediately Obviously Dead, being saved by his Star Power (but only just).
Great Fun, despite the frustration, looking forward to a second play test session soon.
Cheers
Steve
