Finally have a physical copy of Long Rifle. The English postal system is melting under the heat of a certain Pandemic. Oh well. Stiff upper lip and all that!
First game, high hopes for adventure!
Enter Zachary Quinn, hardened Fur Trapper. Grizzled frontiersman in French territory 1754...
No random encounter so onto the first Involuntary Encounter. Defend - British Irregulars - Civilian Military. These are hard times on the frontier. Its not unheard of to meet military types that forcibly requisition your supplies for their unit. This is but one example. Zach hides behind his fire as the Soldier he heard coming reveals himself with his Musket armed and ready. Zach aint no fool! He shoots immediately with his bow. A deadly shot and the business is done. Zach takes the fools musket. Now he has a firearm and a bow!
Voluntary encounter. Hunting. Zach goes hunting as he earns his keep and takes many meals this way. 5 PEFs. First one is what looks like a trail of 5 or so Elk. After a while of following he loses the trail. Damn! Never mind, there’s plenty out there. 2nd PEF - Hmm, looks like a Black Bear. Could be dicey but it would be a big prize! Zach is no coward so he follows the trail. It leads down to the rivers edge and then disappears? That can’t be right. Suddenly the Bears powers forward from out of the scrub! Unable to ready his bow or musket a desperate melee ensues!
(Things appear to be going well until I fluff my extraordinary effort roll. Then the Bear achieves a spectacular mawl and star power is needed. Only one success! That reduces ‘Obviously Dead’ to ‘Out Of The Fight’.)
Our hero falls dead. A bloodied mess; alone and no one knowing his fate. The Bear does not go hungry that day. The moral of our tale? Don’t underestimate big Black Bears no matter how tough you think you are!
For your information. I give all Ferocious animals in Long Rifle the ‘Rage’ attribute which is not in the book but is consistent with other books. This makes them proper mean! Which is as it should be :-)
