So I'd been trying to play this a number of times as we're now on week 3 of "social distancing" but I kept having problems with it. Tried to make a version myself more related to the Capital Ships but still had problems and just went back to the original rules and simplified it down to just a one on one fight. Both of us were Rep 4 and even though i was a Star I didn't use any of the special abilities, just the free will to fly how I wanted to. It finally clicked and even though i'm sure i made some mistakes (I only did one in sight test when they initially got within 5" then just used the dice activation for the rest of it. They pretty much stayed within 5" the whole dogfight.) it was really intense, like a knife fight in a phone booth intense haha. Took me bout an hour to do a one on one (but i was also looking up a lot of stuff) so i'm curious how many ships you guys usually fight with and how long your games go. Looking to do some more of these, maybe a two on two is next. Anyways here's my one on one dogfight, enjoy!
Carson “Cobra” Harper glanced down at his nav readouts, cleared the last checkpoint and rolled his fighter back towards home. He looked out into the cold, empty black on the other side of his cockpit window and thought of what he was going to do when he got back to the Impetuous, the Frigate class capital ship that he was based on. Normally he’d have a wing man but some sectors hadn’t been as quiet as his lately and a combination of high action and low survival rates had cut down the number of available fighters. As a private (sometimes pirate) contractor he was used to flying solo but his new employers, the PDF of the planet Orchid, liked to pinch pennies. As it was, he was stuck flying an unfamiliar Piranha, a light fighter armed with dual Mass Driver cannons and two loads of rockets under his wings. He preferred his old Barracuda with heavier plasma cannons and multiple fire and forget missiles that had kept him out of danger in the past but she was in the shop. A sudden alarm on his heads up display brought him out of his thoughts quickly and he looked to see a bogey come flying in hot at his 8 o’clock. Carson checked the read out and realized it was a Hishen light fighter aptly called a Hell Bat, thing must have its afterburners on because it was gaining on him quickly. He hit the control stick and banked toward the approaching Hell Bat as he radioed it in.
“Impetuous, Cobra. Contact, single Hell Bat in sector 18D4. Engaging.” Carson said as he craned his neck to scan for the approaching fighter while he turned into the fight.
“Roger Cobra, sending Viper to assist. ETA 3 minutes.” Came the reply over the headset.
“Great support, things gonna be over before Viper even gets the message.” Carson thought as he saw the Hell Bat coming in for the attack, afterburners flaring behind him. The Hell Bat must have thought he was out of position but Carson reacted first as he approached.
“Surprise, I’m ready for ya!” Carson yelled, sliding his fighter to the side and whipping his nose around. He mashed on the firing stud and side triggers opening up with both his Mass Drivers and rocket pods. Unfortunately his aim was wide and the Hell Bat jinked through the wild spray of hyper sonic slugs and rockets, some slugs flaring harmlessly off the shields.
“Shit, amateur move!” Carson swore to himself as he realized the pilot had baited him into a bad position and he jerked the control stick hard right as a spray of lasers crossed right in front of him. A master caution light flashed indicating a Fire and Forget Missile was incoming. With no decoys he pulled up on the control stick and ripped back on his engines, slamming his body into his harness, hoping it would throw the missile off. A detonation just off the front starboard side rocked his fighter from the close explosion. Another warning flashed indicating his shields were down, overloaded by the close call. Carson cleared his head as he jammed on the accelerator and was pushed back into his seat by the force of his roaring engines. He glanced down at his nav readout and saw the Hell Bat roaring up on his 5 o’clock.
“Damn, this guy is all over me!” thought Carson as he changed tactics and rapidly ripped back on the throttle again and yanked up on the control stick as he tried to flip and kill his speed hoping the Hell Bat would overshoot him and give him a good shot. Unfortunately the pilot was too good and saw the maneuver coming and pulled a dead man’s stop whirling around and behind Carson and parked himself at Carson’s 3 o’clock, practically floating there lining up his shot.
“Oh shit!” Carson yelled as he tried to roll the fighter and hit the afterburners to get out of the kill shot. Laser fire streaked all around before one found its mark, punching through his unshielded hull and causing internal damage and a leak on the life support system. The master caution flashed again indicating another Fire and Forget Missile was homing in on him and in a last ditch effort he pulled up and corkscrewed as hard as he could. Another explosion just off his rear rocked his ship sending it spinning as new warnings were now flashing Internal Hull damage and Engine Damage as he felt the engines flickering and one of the thrusters shutting down. He wrestled control of his crippled ship and looked out his canopy and couldn’t believe his luck. The missile had knocked him right in front of the floating Hell Bat. Both pilots locked eyes as neither of them could believe Carson wasn’t a dead cold wreck. Carson gave the pilot a smirk as he smashed on the firing studs on his control stick sending hyper sonic rounds racing toward the Hell Bat. Before the pilot could react a round smashed through the ship and must have damaged the shields as a slight shimmer burst around the ship. Two more impacts quickly followed right through the cockpit shattering the armored glass and tearing through the pilot right before the ship burst into a brief explosion before becoming a floating wreck.
“Whew, yea!!” Carson shouted as he felt the adrenaline flowing out of him causing him to shake a bit. He felt elated at being alive but terrified about how close he had truly come to death, it had never been that close. That pilot had him dead to rights and yet here he was, alive. He nursed the damaged engine up to half thrust and started to make for home as he initiated auto repairs on his engine and shields.
“Impetuous, Cobra. Hell Bat destroyed, returning to base.”
“Roger Cobra, glad to hear it.”
I couldn't believe it when he didn't kill me with all those lasers and FF missile and even then if it hadn't spun me right in front of him directly facing him i still probably would have lost the fight. Totally helped he was at speed 0 after that dead mans turn as well, aptly named maneuver haha. It was a great game to play and i really enjoyed it.
