So thinking outside the box a little I'm going to try to use HM-DR rules but just swap in Japanese models and terrain. Reading through everything it looks like it's pretty good.
Shooting will mostly be archery of course, brawl would be swords, etc.
Couple things I could use some help on:
1) Samurai Rep. Given the distinct "break" in traditional Japanese culture I'm trying to figure out a direction here. Sometimes it's just "samurai wins" and others it's more normal. I'm thinking Tea shop interaction vs Bandit interactions. So just have a location mod? In town Samurai get a plus rep and out of town not?
2) I'm digging the DRAW rules as a model for quick draw sword work. That's shooting not brawling though. Anyone have any concerns about just using the rules as is?
3) The professions mostly line up. Townsfolk, etc. I'm leaning towards Samurai as Cowboys and Archers as Gunmen. I'm just going to wing the monsters.
Idas? Thoughts?

That all sounds good! I'd go with what you're thinking!

You do have Japanese ashigaru firing a type of matchlock configured arquebus in the 1500s so you could still have firearms if you were gaming in that era.

Super slow to load, etc. I can just "cheat" the story unless I run into a bunch of Ikki-Ikko. Basically I'm just saying it's bows and stuff.

I started adapting 'Bottle of Rum' to Sengoku Jidai, with some of the 'Legends of Araby' cities as a basis for Sakai and Kyoto. I've since moved to using the THW system to set up encounters and Test of Honour to resolve the combat. I think it's pretty easy to use any THW template really, depending on the type of samurai game you want.
