Hello everyone,
I have several 2HW books now - I think 8. I have read them all and I just can't seem to understand how the games work. I kind of get the sense that the books are written. For people that generally already know the system. The free rules don't really help clarify. YouTube search only yields a really old nuts playthrough. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good write up or video that baby steps noobies?

Well, as a matter of fact, I actually do have some video play of my group from about five years ago playing After the Horsemen in a somewhat RPG-ish mode, but it should give you some idea of how the mechanics work (particularly In Sight reactions which seem to be a lot of folks' sticking points). www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GeXuZcyBG4&list=PLPds0FG8uEYSJa0M-mGTj2oW_JDd9EUQ9But it's hard to give you actual direction without knowing something more significant about where you're having problems. After all, the books are full of step-by-step directions which assume that you are literally walking through them as you read them. If you try to grab them in the abstract they can resist pretty hard. What in particular is giving you problems?

Keep in mind that Star Marine uses the more recent and simpler battle board mechanics and not the more open field/traditional wargame maneuver-and-fire mechanics of Chain Reaction 2015. I actually prefer the older style because it gives a much broader latitude of decisions for players, but I understand that not everyone wants that kind of play. Still, the bulk of the mechanics are largely compatible and leverage much of the same kind of interaction. If you have a problem, let us know and we'll try to figure out how to communicate it in the best way.

Yeah, it's important that you tell us which rule set you have questions about, because the mechanics have evolved over time. Newer sets such as the 5150 No Limits series & Star Marine play differently than 5150 Urban Renewal & 5150 NHC PI & there are some games that play quite differently such as 5150 Alien Fight Night.
Be sure to use the stop boxes in the books & ask questions. The "aha!" Moment will eventually come & when it does you'll wonder why you didn't get it right away. Lol

Ok I see that there is traditional wargame table play as well. To me the hobby aspect is half the fun. I think I am starting to get it.
Are any of the games less military focused and more ragtag group of alie ng a pursuing their own self interests? Mercenaries, bounty hunters, etc?

For traditional table top non-military, you would want to look at 5150 New Beginnings Urban Renewal or 5150 Fringe Space.
If you want a game that can be played table top and/or battle board, then take a look at 5150 Missions which can be military or mercenary OR 5150 Back Alleys Bright Lights..
If looking for more of an RPG theater of the mind and/or battle board, then the 5150 No Limits series is good. I know both Maiden Voyage & The Cool Coolie have kind of a Firefly vibe to them.
I use a 2 foot X 2 foot board as a battle board in No Limits games, sometimes with the terrain & movement rules from 5150 Missions when fighting on the battle board if the encounter calls for pieces of terrain which block line of sight or have more than one room or building in play.. If I want a lot of terrain, then I set up a 4' X 4' board and play 5150 Missions or 5150 Urban Renewal.
5150: New Hope City PI is a great rule set if your character or group is investigating crimes, but the copy I have is a supplement & you have to have 5150 Urban Renewal to play.
5150: Back Alleys Bright Lights is an interesting game in that you use cards to build sections of New Hope City, which your characters move through. If an encounter occurs in a section, the you can either use a battle board or set up table top terrain of that section and then resolve the action.
5150 Fringe Space also has a strong Firefly vibe to it, but is a bit more detailed and table top oriented than the 5150 No Limits series.

Download Chain Reaction 2015It's what you want. Terrain, measuring, etc. And the nice thing is all of the Battle Board rules will work with it. Let me know what you have questions and I can answer them.

I am still more of a terrain guy, so all my Star Marine games are done on tabletop. Here's an AAR from a couple years ago. sbminisguy.wordpress.com/2017/02/10/star-marine-5150-aar-boarding-a-hishen-slaver/

Here's a free 4 page download that lets you play any of our Battle Board games on a tabletop with minis and terrain. Set up the terrain and table, move the minis and when they get in sight use the Battle Board rules to shoot, melee, and test morale! www.twohourwargames.com/frbabogatomi.html

By the way, I still think that a video or serie of videos explaining the THW concepts is a very good idea !
