Hi gang! Good to be back. Loving the new streamlined rules for Six Gun Sound. I have a question regarding monthly encounters:
The rules say you get 1 involuntary encounter at the start of each month and can choose to have a voluntary encounter. OK so, my star is a bounty hunter. He has arrived in town to take a job tracking down a band of outlaws who were reported to be hiding out in a place called Devil's Elbow. For the Carousing encounter, it says I can visit as many buildings as I choose in a day part. So my star goes to the sheriff's office to get the details on the gang. Interacts with the Sheriff. Then goes to the hotel, checks in (interacts with the desk clerk). Spends the night at the hotel.
The next day he gets up and starts scouting around town to recruit his band and begin the hunt. But this is a new day part - the next day. Does this count as a separate encounter? If so, how many voluntary encounters can I have before the end of the month? Thanks!

Ok, the Special Insturctions for the Carousing encounter says that there will be a minimum of 1 PEF per building you enter & you can choose to resolve as many or as few of them as desired. The Encounter occurs in the Day Part of your choice unless specified otherwise.
If you accomplished the objectives of the Encounter then you can end the Encounter & start another Encounter. It's your game, you get to set the parameters for how long the Carousing Encounter can last. If I were playing the Carousing Encounter with the objective to recruit your band, then the Encounter would still be going on until I recruit the grunts I need regardless of the number of day parts it takes.
The rule of thumb for the campaign is 1 involuntary encounter per month plus the choice to have or not have a 2nd encounter in the month. An encounter could take as little as a few minutes or take a couple of weeks in game time.
Hope this helps. Who knows, your character may get the monicker "Dwadlin' Pete". Just kidding. Just think of the Carousing Encounter taking as long as needed to meet the Encounter objectives.

Hi Atomicfloozy! Good to see you again!
In your response, you said: …"If you accomplished the objectives of the Encounter then you can end the Encounter & start another Encounter."
That helps a lot. I never realized that. THW rules have always said you get an involuntary encounter and x number of voluntary encounters per month, in this case, One. I was always under the impression that that meant 1 encounter - period. Once the encounter was completed that was it for the month. I felt that if I ran more than the specified number of encounters in a given month, I was breaking the rules. At the same time, it didn't make always make sense that there would be a month between every encounter. There goes my analytical brain again. LOL I will have to try to interpret the rules a little more ambiguously.
Thank you for your response.
PS: I neglected to mention that my character arrived in town at sunset after riding the trail all day to get there. Figured the only ones in town still up and about after dark would be the ruffians in the saloons. Not the type he is looking for to help hunt a band of outlaws. Better to get a good night's rest and start fresh in the morning when the drunks are in bed and more suitable, able-bodied candidates are up and about. Wouldn't want a nickname like "Dawdlin' Pete" to stick. Bad for business when you're a bounty hunter. LOL

A good example of an encounter stretching over several day parts would be the original THE MAGNEFICENT SEVEN where the recruiting of the band takes place over a few days - there's a lot of interaction & action, but I would consider it just one encounter.
If playing the campaign, you do get a mandatory involuntary encounter each month & you can choose to have a second voluntary encounter in that month. Sometimes an encounter takes only a few minutes in the character's life, like a shoot out in a saloon and sometimes an encounter could take several weeks like a cattle drive.

Yep, Encounters are confined to one day, so play it as you want. I do!
