While Priority Mail didn't do them any favors, landing in a box that looked like it had been dropped from orbit and taken a little damage on the way down – the books are just fine and properly placed on the shelf along with the new New Beginnings, which means I have no more excuses for not getting to put some of this stuff into action. Especially since I noticed that there is a ton of Five Parsecs From Home play online – but pretty much nothing for 5150. While 5 Parsecs is great and all, I think we might need some representation.

I’m a fan of both Ed’s and Ivan’s works and it’s great to see 5P get lots of representation, but, yeah, I’d love to see Ed getting more recognition too!

I reckon its all about playing the game. For once I’m not talking about THW games. I’m talking business…
Nordic Weasel has always been sold via Drivethru RPG/ Wargame Vault pretty much exclusively. You reach a large audience but you give a large cut to Drivethru. When I found out how much Drivethru take as a cut I was pretty shocked. I found Ed’s website and gave the money directly to him. I try to do that whenever I find any game producer I like. Anyway, because Nordic Weasel became popular they were courted by publishers and went in to partnership with Modiphius who have given their books the super deluxe treatment, hence the exposure. Again, how much is Modiphius taking? Ed has always gone his own way. I’m a stubborn independent minded guy so I couldn’t agree more with his decision. That is, if I’m right…

That is, if I’m right… If it's in line with much of the rest of the industry in terms of distribution and development, probably slightly north of 40%. On the other hand, they've probably done at least 10 times previous sales with the new third edition publication than they did on previous editions, which odds are good makeup for giving up the percentage to a larger distributor. Not that I'm against independent publishing; I've been a strong proponent of it in multiple industries for decades at this point. But Ed did recently announce that he was going to providing printing through Amazon rather than continuing to go through a smaller press, which was probably the right idea. They are definitely taking a cut (though since they are just doing printing and binding of a press-ready PDF along with distribution, it would be less than what Modiphius is getting). I love the THW games and I push them wherever I go, but I can't deny that I would love to see them receive a proper modernized layout, even purely black and white, for the interiors if they ever see a new edition. And the smaller physical layout that FiveCore has received is pretty nice, too. That 9.5 x 6.5 form factor is really convenient. Combine that with the usual THW coil or comb binding and thin soft covers? I could really go for that. I'm not going to lie, I've tinkered with some different layout options for Chain Reaction in my spare time just to clean up and modernize the way it looks and now I'm tempted to try and bring it down to that size, just to see how it feels. (It's a terrible burden being a Renaissance geek.)

I don’t know if you’ve seen Osprey’s new line of RPG books? I have one and its a small format hardback. Very cool. In my dreams I’d love a 5150 edition like that

I have one and its a small format hardback. Very cool. In my dreams I’d love a 5150 edition like that It's not that big a deal if you've got access to any kind of layout software and the wherewithal to tinker with it. I'm fond of Affinity Publisher these days but back before the Iron Age, I got started with Ventura Publisher. On and off experience in the indie RPG industry means you do a little bit of everything, though if you ask me to do any art you're probably going to have a bad time. For Chain Reaction, the hard part is actually just getting the text into some standalone formatting that you can work with. The rest is just endless fiddling. Given the page count of the new 5150: New Beginnings, it would be very interesting to try to fit it into 6 x 9. It's already a pretty thick tome at 8.5 x 11. Add a modern amount of art in the smaller format and it's probably a good thing that we're talking about some sort of coil binding. Nobody wants a text that would make Hero/ Champions feel like a magazine.

Damn. How about volumes one and two? Eh, might as well go balls-out and make it as thick as necessary. With a lay-flat binding, you don't have to worry as much about that. Go big or go home.
