I can't find any reason in the rules to go prone voluntarily and I don't know what it means involuntarily either. What am I missing?

Page 17 explains it. I'm active and move around a building corner, trigger an In Sight. I drop prone. The guy behind me moves to the corner of the building in cover now and can fire over me. I'm active so can fire as well. If I was standing up, I'd block his LOS.
