Most of the time, I use either dice (with the numbers for Reps), or cheap plastic figures, since I prefer to spend my money on the games themselves. The dice suggestion is a great one. Bought a container of 36 mini-d6 and have been using them instead of digging out minis or firing up Tabletop Sim when I want to do quick Chain Reaction encounters while watching a movie or TV show. Anything that involves actual campaign rules and especially the full 3x3 table I'll still break open the miniatures cases, but this has been a great time saver for casual dice throwing. By far the most productive and efficient $6 I've ever spent on something miniatures related. Lol
When someone goes out of the fight or obviously dead, just chuck em back in the container. When they Duck Back just push the die back a bit and turn the corner toward the enemy. It helps to take notes and keep everything straight, but I tend to do that anyways with miniatures and whatnot to keep track of encounters, campaigns, and character details.
