It's been eons since I've read any WWII. I did read HOMAGE TO CATALONIA by George Orwell year before last which is right before WWII. It was a good read and gave insight on the infighting that contributed to the Republicans losing to the fascist-backed Nationalists.

The Eagle Has Landed by Jack Higgins. I also enjoyed the movie with Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, and Robert Duvall.

Last year I read Ken Follett's novels : "Fall of Giants", "Winter of the World" and "Edge of Eternity", that make up the "Century Trilogy". It spans from WWI to the cold war but I highly recommend it !

Two more good reads are “A Bridge Too Far” and “Band of Brothers”.

Years ago I read Hell Has No Heroes by Wayne Robinson. I'm not sure if it's the inspiration for the 2014 film Fury, but it's a very gritty, realistic war novel about an American tanker crew from D-Day to V-E day. Recommended checking it out if you can find a copy for a reasonable price, though it's certainly not worth what some people ask for used copies.

Most of Stephen Ambrose's books are good reads though I am always a bit suspicious of how good the history is in them. I am going to reread Pegasus Bridge soon for the 75 anniversary of D-Day.

The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer is a very good read. He recounts his time as a German soldier on the eastern front.

There's been an explosion of first person accounts of WW2 and niche history ebooks. Where before they needed to go through the whole print publisher process, now on Amazon scholars and the children and grandchildren of WW2 veterans can now publish history books and memoirs with little to zero cost. And on Amazon you can also get cheap paperbacks. A few come to mind:
* D-Day through German eyes * Tank Rider (soviet tank desant infantry memoirs) * Another River, Another Town (US tank crewman) * Voices of Stalingrad (series of interviews of Russian WW2 vets)

I suggest picking up other thrilling books from Cornelius' Ryan trilogy: "A Bridge Too Far" - Market Garden, and "The Last Battle" battle of Berlin.
