Has THW ever published an urban fantasy RPG? Or has anyone hacked one out of an existing game? NOT zombies, please, but Harry Dresden, Rachel Morgan, Peter Grant stuff. I have looked, but the THW line is spread between THW and Rebel (and maybe, somebody's USB drive), so I'm never sure I've seen it all. If anyone can point me to such a beast, thanks in advance.

Hello,
THW published the Larger than Life and Lovecraft's Revenge titles and they follow a movie-like sequence of events. Larger Than Life is a pulp setting. Lovecraft's revenge is a a horror themed pulp.
Dresden is very cinematic and follows familiar tropes which would work great as a pulp. Combining larger than life and Lovecraft's Revenge allows you to have a pulp with monsters and magic and some powerful deity-like things as big bads. Just like in Dresden where he fights demons, fairies and whatnot, by combining these 2 rule sets and some creativity you can have a full blown adventure with magic that is powerful but dangerous and monsters and a system that makes the game progressively harder like in the novels.
You can start with being an investigator, with a base of operations and all that, with a Co-star to be your partner or back up and hired help to make your party stronger. The rules are easy to understand and versatile enough to allow for creative additions and custom rules.
I played around with making custom rules and i played a fun Angel/Buffy themed game with Larger than Life and Lovecraft's Revenge for example. I used tiles from board games i had to simulate a base of operations with rooms. I placed my figures there when needed and then used ATZ style tabletop rules for PEFs, with my party entering always in section 1 and having to reach an objective somewhere in section 8 or 9. It was a great game.
THW rules are very easy to modify- and some rule sets have a magic system that is familiar to Dresden, like Lovecraft's revenge. Using LR as a base, you can modify or make up your own spells to mimic what was in the books. Or just use the LR spells, they are great and dark enough to simulate Dresden novels.
Hope that helps.
Best,
Urza

Following urzamightstone comment, using Lovecraft's Revenge you could add terror elements like vampires, witches or werewolves if you use High Moon, it is a western rulebook, however the elements are usable in other settings.

Urban fantasy RPG? Sword and sorcery, pulp, horror?

Urban fantasy RPG? Sword and sorcery, pulp, horror? Not quite any of the above. Sorcery - but no swords - in a modern urban setting. Noir but not pulp. Elements of horror without the overpowering sense of helplessness. Maybe Glocks and Sorcery? Actually, I had overlooked Lovecraft's Revenge because the pure horror of the Lovecraft mythos was not what I was after. Now that I have looked at it, it may be a base for what I was looking for. I will try to excise the madness rules without weakening the monsters too much, and replace some of the Cthulhu types with other mythos. I may borrow some story elements from NHC:PI. First, though, I will try it straight. Many thanks to urzamightstone and Slorm for pointing me to it!

I dont know if you are familiar with modern RPGs but it sounds like you are after something like ‘Monster of the week’? Kinda like Buffy the vampire slayer. That would be cool.

Did you know that 50 Shades of Grey started out as Urban Fantasy? First drafts of the story was fan-fiction for the Twilight series - it's my understanding Grey was originally a vampire. I've never read the book or watched the movie & only know of one friend who has - she is a big horror fan which sometimes crosses over into urban fantasy.
Just more information to further scar your cortex! Lol
